Be a Mouthpiece

Connection is a mouthpiece.

Of who we are, who we have been, who we want to be.

How are you using your mouthpiece to power how you feel connected in the world?

As I got into my office after traveling for 3 weeks, I considered the trombone. The one that’s in my office, that has played a part in me being and becoming who I am. It was the same instrument my Dad played which I then played from 5th grade into college. Concert band, repertory band, competitive marching band, pep band, jazz band.

When we took a family trip one time, my band teacher even instructed me to bring the mouthpiece along so I could practice.

This morning I particularly noticed the mouthpieces in the open case.

And for some reason the mouthpieces got me thinking….

Knowing I was set to film a post-event follow up video for a keynote client, here’s what connected for me as I recorded the message.

  1. Connection is a mouthpiece to use to speak our truth. To share and be emboldened, to boost our own confidence so that we are more fully who we wish to be.
  2. Our voice is our mouthpiece which is a tool for us to use. When we think about our own voice, that same mouthpiece can be the implement we use to speak up, to step up, to be heard.
  3. We’re already talking and being in this world; let’s use the mouthpiece to tune into who we wish to be so that we do the work that gratifies and pleases us. The work that makes us feel alive and fulfilled, the work that manifests what a lot of people say they want – “to help people.”
  4. That if I use the mouthpiece to live my life and serve as I wish, the outcome is entirely on me.
  5. That if I don’t use the mouthpiece to live my life and serve as I wish, the outcome is entirely on me.

Ask yourself today: what is my mouthpiece and to what purpose? Who am I? Who do I wish to be? And how can I be my best self by utilizing the singularly unique mouthpiece only I possess? What impact will I choose to make with the power of connection by speaking up? How am I using my voice – my mouthpiece – for good in the world?

This idea is really sticking for me today and I hope the idea sticks with you. Here’s a short video I posted in LinkedIn with a few more thoughts on this idea.

If you’re so inspired tell me in the comments below: how are you using your voice – your mouthpiece – to be and do you?

Let’s keep playing the music of connection together. It matters, you matter.
